A star patiently waiting and taking her time to finally shine so bright, timing is everything for J-nine. With small opportunities here and there landing on her lap since many years ago, she held back until it felt right.
J-nine is now one of the newest artists signed to Def Jam Recordings Philippines. Her discovery was purely coincidental, maybe accidental. She modeled for a VVS Collective music video KABADO, a group also signed to Def Jam Recordings Philippines. After hearing her sing during the shoot’s after party, she was offered to collaborate with King Promdi.
Born Janine Castillo, J-Nine started singing when she was only four years old. She was heavily influenced by her dad’s favorite OPM singers, which included power vocalists like Sarah Geronimo and Regine Velasquez. She took formal singing lessons in high school. Recitals and public performances made her an even more confident performer. Eventually, she learned to play the guitar, which helped her discover her own genre and individuality as a singer.
Truly a born performer, J-nine would even volunteer to sing with bands—not for the money, but for the chance to be on stage. More recently, she would share her music on various social platforms. She’d do covers and get tons of requests from her growing fanbase.
Now 20 years old, J-nine spends most of her time completing her Entrepreneurship course at San Beda University. She manages her fruit drink business on the side and devotes the rest of her days and nights for her true passion—music. J-nine is also currently a member of the Bedan Musicians Guild.
J-nine considers Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and the artists of 88Rising as her major musical influences. From yesterday’s covers, J-nine holds her pen tight as she tries to write her originals. It wouldn’t be a surprise if she eventually succeeds in collaborating with huge OPM artists—her dream collaborations include Kiyo, Arthur Nery, and Gloc-9 among others.
Now signed with Def Jam Recordings Philippines, there’s much to look forward to in J-nine’s career. Though the pressure is on, she is excited to take on the larger stage. And there’s no better place to do that than with the top hip hop and urban music label in the country!
Def Jam Recordings Philippines and Def Jam Recordings South East Asia took to socials the announcement of J-nine as part of the family.
#ICYMI: J-nine also dropped a new single entitled ‘GG’ with VVS Collective’s King Promdi yesterday.
About Def Jam Recordings South East Asia:
Since its game-changing launch, Def Jam SEA has already paid its dues several times over, flexing its musical chops at high-profile showcases such as 2019’s Culture Cartel convention in Singapore, and helping to usher in global sports retailer JD Sport’s entry into the Thai market during the brand’s massive launch party in Bangkok.
With hip-hop’s influence spanning the globe, it was only a matter of time before Def Jam slung its brand of dope directly in South East Asia, arguably the most excitingly fresh frontline for new, boundary-pushing music. The label has also been busy bringing in more stellar talent from across the region into its fold, adding Abubakarxli of Malaysia, Indonesia’s Ben Utomo and Rayi Putra, and welcoming Vietnam and the Philippines to the family, represented by the likes of SeaChains and VVS Collective, respectively.
