Manila, Philippines — Angela Ken funnily introduces herself: “Angela Ken — because she can. She may not sometimes, but she’ll try.” It’s a playful twist on her name, but also a fitting thesis for her young career. She has moved from a pandemic-born breakthrough into a space where theater, music, and performance collide into one, and she’s not afraid to push beyond expectations.
Angela started as what she calls “pandemic artist.” Her earliest audiences were cameras and screens, and her first stages were live streams. But when the doors of theater opened, something shifted. “Ang laki ng factor ng theater sa akin when it comes to my craft,” she says. “I saw the connection, the discipline, the grounds where everything starts. Nothing is easy, but that’s what makes the growth real.”

For her, the immediacy of theater — hearing the audience cry when a scene lands, showing unfiltered vocals, speaking emotions face-to-face — sharpened her artistry. It taught her that every detail matters. “ Every instrument, every element, has its own life. At dahil sa buhay ng mga instrumentong ‘yun, nagkakaroon ka ng magandang mundo.”
That hunger for live performance has since fueled her passion for music, especially bands. Whether from the new generation or classic acts, she’s drawn to the way they thrive on the stage. “Every time you step on stage with a band, there’s this thirst for excellence. You hear the bass, the drums, the guitars — every element is important.”
But Angela’s artistry is not just about technique. It’s grounded in authenticity. She calls it the “silver lining” — the truth and vulnerability that tie her warm-toned music with her cool-toned style, her wit with her seriousness. “…Ang pinaka-importante naman talaga doon is the truth, the authenticity, and the vulnerability that you have in every decision that you make…” and for her, it’s what makes her special; what makes Angela, Angela.

Her philosophy is simple but powerful: music should always carry joy, even in pain. “Semento ang fun sa musika,” she says. “Even sadness, you should enjoy, for you to express it truthfully.” For her, fun is not superficial; it’s the foundation that makes art both relevant and healing.
That outlook has shaped her advocacy as an artist: to never be boxed in. “Wala namang masamang subukan. As long as you’re not stepping on anyone, try. Explore. Don’t be afraid to shift genres or processes.” It’s a bold stance, especially in an industry that still carries unspoken expectations, particularly for women. Angela meets this with playful defiance: “Kung maraming nagda-doubt sa’yo kasi babae ka, flip your hair. Tadyakan mo sila. Because you can.”
In the end, her mantra distills it all: “Hangga’t may isang taong naniniwala sa’yo, may isang rason para magpatuloy.” As long as there’s a listener, a believer, even just one — Angela Ken will keep going.
Her latest single, “Pwede Bang Mamaya?”, is already streaming across platforms. But as she teases, the year is only half over. There’s more music, more madness, more heart on the way. Angela Ken — and she will.
