Earl Agustin Releases a Guide to Letting Go in New Single “Di Na”

Earl Agustin

In his journey in the OPM scene, Earl Agustin has been one of the architects of creating the modern “Manila Sound” revival. With hits like “Pag-ibig ng Ikaw at Ako,” or “Dalangin,” and even the chart-topping single of all “Tibok,” Earl mastered the art of the upbeat tragedy, wrapping heartbreak in the shimmering gold of 70s retro-pop and VST-inspired grooves. But in his brand new single, “Di Na,”  the mask of the rhythmic tempo finally slips, revealing an artist ready to let the pain sit front and center.

Released on March 13, Di Na marks a significant sonic and emotional swing for the singer-songwriter. While his previous work often “hid the pain behind the music,” this new track embraces a vulnerability that is both heavy and healing.

While the DNA of Earl’s artistry remains rooted in the genres of retro-pop and motown, this new track introduces a darker, more velvet-toned palette that leaves listeners the feeling of gentleness along with Earl’s eargasmic vocals. Thus, the production, helmed by the acclaimed Jean-Paul Verona, is a masterclass in atmosphere. To bring this vision to life, a dream team of musicians was brought in: Kim Lopez on keyboards, Ronald Tomas on lush strings and horn sections, and Rommel De la Cruz on bass; Earl shares that he made a demo with specific drum and string patterns for specific sections just to evoke a feel that he wanted the song to have. He added that he tried to be more open with the pain this time and “letting it [the track] sit on the melodies and the chords that I chose upon composing the song itself” — making this track dive into a more emotional and soulful part of his artistry.

What’s an Earl Agustin signature if not for its lyrical honesty? Built on the haunting realization, “Di na babalik sa ating dati,” the track explores the heavy reality of a relationship that has run its course. “I was focusing solely on the idea of having to let go [of something or someone] as a last act of love. I think that this [situation] does not get talked about a lot, so I thought it was an interesting thing to write about,” Earl explains. He also reflected on how the song opens the idea of surrendering, “to the things that are completely out of our control;  an acceptance that sometimes it is okay to be the one who lets go, especially when the relationship no longer serves the both of you.”

As Earl Agustin leans into embracing his “emotional way of writing,” Di Na stands as a brave testament to his growth — a song that doesn’t just ask us to dance through the heartbreak, but to finally make peace with it and find the strength in letting go.
