Comfort Outside the Comfort Zone: The Quiet Leap of Solace Out The Door – The Band That Made Peace Feel Brave

Manila, Philippines — In a city where noise is constant and movement never stops, Solace Out The Door offers something quieter, but no less powerful. The Manila-based indie band has built their identity around a feeling many are still searching for: peace that doesn’t ask you to stay still. Since forming in 2022, the group has steadily carved out a sound that’s fluid, feminine, and emotionally grounded—music that invites you to leap, even when the ground below isn’t fully visible.

What began as a spontaneous coming together of friends-of-friends has since grown into a self-managed collective navigating adulthood, creativity, and commitment all at once. For Solace Out The Door, the journey has never been about perfection. It’s about choosing to move forward anyway.

From Friends of Friends to a Band

Solace Out The Door officially came together in 2022, when the members—then mostly students—joined forces to compete in a Battle of the Bands at Mapúa University. They won. And instead of letting the moment pass, they kept playing.

At the time, they were strangers learning how to work with one another in real time. What helped was their shared experience as students figuring things out together. “Time really gave us the space to get to know each other and vibe,” one member shares. What started as a backing band for a solo project slowly evolved into something more intentional—eventually becoming Solace Out The Door.

Now, with some members already working professionals, the band has adapted by treating itself almost like a student organization. Tasks are delegated. Responsibilities are shared. “We work even without a manager,” they explain. “It’s really about prioritizing and trusting each other.”

Running an Indie Band Like a Business

Creating and releasing their own music has given Solace Out The Door full creative freedom—but it’s also come with its own set of challenges.

On the upside, every idea is welcome. Songs often begin with a theme or emotion, then grow through collaboration. The band builds each track collectively—adding piano lines, arranging sections, refining textures—until the song feels complete. “It’s really a sharing of ideas,” they say. “That’s the best part.”

They’re also supported by a close-knit creative circle, including their producer and the team at 9 Degrees North, whom they credit as instrumental in helping them enter the industry. Still, independence means wearing many hats. Between gigs, content creation, editing, and promotion, the work never really stops.

“It’s fun and stressful and hectic,” one member admits. “It’s like running your own brand and your own business.” What makes it manageable is their community—friends who show up, help out, and support them like an extended team. “We really couldn’t do this without them.”

What’s in a Name: Comfort Beyond Comfort Zones

The name Solace Out The Door was born out of urgency—and instinct. After a gig, the band realized they needed a name immediately for another show the next day. Suggestions flew in, but nothing quite fit until they landed on something that captured their essence.

“We came up with Solace Out The Door. Because when you think about it, solace is peace… it means we are providing comfort outside your comfort zone. This platform, this talent, is our comfort zone, outside our own comfort zone. And that’s what we hope to give to our listeners also. Our music is comfort outside their comfort zones as well.”

That idea—of offering calm while encouraging movement—became central to their identity. For the band, music itself is their comfort zone, even as it pushes them into unfamiliar territory. And that’s exactly what they hope listeners feel too.

The name also reflects their relationship with femininity. As a predominantly female band, they’re aware of the stereotypes that come with that label. “If it’s a girl band, people expect maangas rock,” they say. Instead, Solace Out The Door leans into softness without losing intensity. Their sound moves gently, then hits hard—fluid, emotional, and unapologetically expressive. “One thing that enticed me with Solace is that the feminine energy of the name… We wanted to break that stigma.”

“If you notice our music, we have a taste that it’s not just feminine… medyo may rock, pero at the same time… Fluid. Fluid’s the right term.”

Defining the Sound Through ‘Tumalon’

Their debut single, “Tumalon,” became the blueprint for the Solace Out The Door sound. The song’s title—meaning to jump—perfectly captured where they were as a band and as individuals coming out of the pandemic.

“It was really about taking a leap,” they share. After years of disruption, uncertainty, and personal hardship, the song resonated deeply with all of them. From there, the band’s sonic identity took shape—anchored in calm but charged with emotion.

“There is powerful expression that comes with peace,” one member reflects. “The world isn’t as peaceful as we want it to be. But when you take a leap of faith, when you choose comfort, even when you make mistakes—there’s still peace in that.”

That philosophy lives at the core of their music. Solace Out The Door doesn’t shy away from vulnerability. Instead, they turn it into something tangible—something listeners can hold onto.

Leap of Faith

For every member of Solace Out The Door, tumalon means something personal.

One learned bass from scratch simply because the band needed one—only to discover it felt like the instrument they were meant to play. Another stepped out of being a “bedroom guitarist,” nervous about jamming with others, and found growth through collaboration. One member moved from the Visayas to Manila, intending to leave music behind entirely, before saying yes to a Battle of the Bands “just once”—and never stopping.

For others, the leap came later, while juggling full-time work and the demands of a self-managed indie band. “It’s exhausting,” one admits. “But I want to see this through until the end.”

Perhaps the most pivotal leap was giving “Tumalon” to the band itself. Originally meant to be released as a solo track years earlier, the song was held back until the timing—and the people—felt right. “Giving it to Solace Out The Door changed everything,” they say. “It was right place, right time, right people.”

Moving Forward, Together

Solace Out The Door is still evolving—but that’s exactly the point. They are a band built on shared risks, quiet confidence, and the belief that peace doesn’t have to mean standing still.

As they continue writing, playing, and growing into the artists they’re becoming, one thing remains constant: their willingness to leap. And in doing so, they offer listeners something rare—a reminder that comfort can exist beyond what’s familiar, and that sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is step out the door.
